This classis is featured in many retirement communities, as a timeless classic. Cast from Song of the South:

James Baskett James Baskett as Uncle Remus, Due to lack of money, though, he abandoned his studies to pursue his untrained dramatic talent. While visiting Chicago, he was lured to the stage and performed under the Salem Whitney and Homer Tutt Troupes before moving to New York to join Bill "Bojangles" Robinson's company. James quickly established himself as one of the leading black performers in New York and appeared in several of Lew Leslie's annual "Blackbird" productions. "And since then," said Baskett in a 1946 interview, "I've never been out of show business, and pharmacology just became a lost dream."

Bobby Driscoll

Up until 1946 Bobby Driscoll had been playing minor roles in various films, but Song of the South was his big break. Playing the plantation boy who clung onto every word Uncle Remus spoke, Bobby delivered his role flawlessly and it was clear to see Walt Disney had picked a winner. He was the first actor to be under a personal contract with the Walt Disney studio.

Bobby went on to play notable performances in Disney movies such as Melody Time (1948), Pecos Bill (1948), So Dear To My Heart (1949), Treasure Island (1950), and the voice of Peter Pan in Peter Pan (1953), his last production with Disney. Bobby was hired as a child actor, and when he was no longer a child, he lost his handle in the acting industry.

Hattie McDaniel The first African-American to be nominated for an Academy Award, McDaniel was honored as Best Supporting Actress of 1939 for her portrayal of Mammy in David O. Selznick's classic motion picture Gone With The Wind (1939).

Hattie began her career much like James Baskett, touring the black theater circuit, working in tent shows and vaudeville and later turning to radio as a vocalist. In the 1930's and 40's McDaniel became one of the most prominent film character actresses in Hollywood, creating roles closely identifying with hard working black women. She was also criticized by the NAACP for perpetuating black stereotypes.

Among her other memorable appearances were in films such as The Story of Temple Drake (1933), Imitation of Life (1934), Judge Priest (1934), Showboat (1936), Nothing Sacred (1937), Margie (1946) and some other 90 appearances/credits.
